Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a 2011 British spy film based on the 1974 novel of the same name by John le CarrÃ. The film stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, a veteran intelligence officer who is tasked with finding a Soviet mole within the British secret service. The film also features Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch and others in supporting roles.
The film was directed by Tomas Alfredson and written by Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Oldman, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. The film received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, screenplay, cinematography and atmosphere.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is set in the bleak days of the Cold War, when espionage was a dangerous and dirty business. The film follows Smiley as he tries to uncover the identity of the mole, who has been leaking vital information to the Soviets for years. Smiley has to deal with a complex web of lies, betrayal and deception, as well as his own personal demons.
The film is a faithful adaptation of le CarrÃ's novel, which was inspired by the real-life case of the Cambridge Five, a group of British spies who worked for the Soviet Union from the 1930s to the 1950s. The novel is the first in le CarrÃ's Karla trilogy, which also includes The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a gripping and intelligent film that explores the moral ambiguity and psychological toll of espionage. It is a masterful example of how to adapt a complex and dense novel into a cinematic form. The film is available on DVD and Blu-ray from various sources.
The film begins in 1973, when Control (John Hurt), the head of the British intelligence service known as the Circus, sends agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) to Hungary to meet a Hungarian general who claims to have information about the mole. However, the mission goes wrong and Prideaux is shot and captured by the Soviets. Control and his deputy George Smiley (Gary Oldman) are forced to retire in disgrace.
Soon after, a rogue agent named Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy) contacts the Circus and claims to have evidence of the mole's identity. The minister of intelligence assigns an outsider, Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney), to oversee the investigation. Lacon appoints Smiley, who was previously one of Control's most trusted colleagues, to lead the inquiry.
Smiley begins to retrace Control's steps and interviews former members of the Circus who were part of an operation codenamed Witchcraft, which involved obtaining intelligence from a mysterious Soviet source known as Merlin. Smiley learns that Control had narrowed down the suspects to five senior officers, whom he gave the code names Tinker (Toby Esterhase), Tailor (Bill Haydon), Soldier (Roy Bland), Poor Man (Toby Jones) and Beggar Man (Smiley himself).
With the help of his loyal assistant Peter Guillam (Benedict Cumberbatch) and retired analyst Connie Sachs (Kathy Burke), Smiley gradually uncovers the mole's identity and motives. He also discovers that his estranged wife Ann (Katrina Vasilieva) had an affair with one of the suspects. Smiley faces a dangerous confrontation with the mole, who has been working for Karla (MiklÃs BÃnyai), the elusive head of Soviet intelligence. aa16f39245
